Liquid Silicone Injection Molding Process
The liquid injection molding (LIM) process utilizes a spring-loaded pin nozzle to prevent machine hardware from becoming clogged. This mechanism allows injection pressure to exceed barrel pressure, maintaining clear channels.
The system employs a pump for precise mixing and dispensing of two-part, platinum-cured liquid silicone rubber. One plunger contains the base polymer (Part A), while the other holds the catalyst (Part B). These components are pumped into a static mixer, initiating the vulcanization reaction. For colored parts, a third plunger adds pigment.
The mixed liquid is injected into heated molds where it cures and hardens. Unlike thermoplastics which are melted before injection and cooled in molds, LSR starts as a fluid and cures under heat.
Process Optimization
Manufacturers use CAD tools and simulation software to optimize designs and processing parameters. Thermal imaging technology helps identify potential production issues, preventing molding defects and design irregularities.
Liquid Injection Molding Machine Components
  • Supply drums: Separate containers for components A and B, plus optional color pigment
  • Metering units: Precisely pump materials in predetermined ratios
  • Mixers: Combine components after metering for exact proportioning
  • Injectors: Pressurized mechanism for fine-tuned injection rates
  • Nozzles: Feature automatic shut-off valves to prevent leaks and overfilling
In optimized production environments, LIM machines and handling equipment are fully automated for maximum accuracy and consistency. Process parameters are digitally controlled, with all ancillary equipment integrated into the molding cell.
