As product designs become more sophisticated, manufacturers are increasingly combining different materials to achieve better functionality and user experience. One important technology supporting this trend is Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) overmolding.

LSR overmolding involves molding liquid silicone rubber directly onto another component, such as plastic or metal. Instead of manufacturing separate parts and assembling them afterward, the silicone layer can be integrated into the final component during the molding process.

This technology offers several advantages. It can reduce assembly operations, improve sealing performance, and create a more integrated product structure.

LSR overmolding is widely considered for applications requiring soft-touch surfaces, waterproof sealing, insulation, vibration absorption, or improved user comfort.

For example, silicone can be overmolded onto plastic electronic housings to create waterproof seals. In automotive applications, LSR can be combined with plastic connectors and other components to provide environmental protection and sealing performance.

Medical devices are another important application area. Silicone overmolding can be used to create soft interfaces and sealing components while maintaining the structural strength of the underlying plastic component.

However, successful LSR overmolding requires careful consideration of material compatibility. The plastic substrate needs to withstand the molding temperature, and the bonding characteristics between the silicone and substrate must be evaluated during product development.

Mold design is equally important. The mold needs to accurately position the insert and control the silicone flow around the substrate. Proper venting and gating are also important for preventing air traps and incomplete filling.

Modern LSR injection molding systems can be integrated with automation equipment for insert loading, molding, and part removal. This makes overmolding suitable not only for prototypes but also for high-volume manufacturing.

As manufacturers continue to seek ways to reduce assembly costs and improve product functionality, LSR overmolding is expected to remain an important technology for silicone-plastic and silicone-metal products.
