Cold Runner Technology in LSR Molding: Reducing Material Waste and Improving Production Efficiency

Material efficiency is becoming increasingly important in modern silicone manufacturing. As manufacturers face pressure to control production costs and reduce material waste, cold runner technology has become an important consideration in Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) injection molding.

Unlike conventional hot runner systems, an LSR cold runner system keeps the silicone material in the runner system from curing before it enters the heated mold cavities. This allows the material to remain in a suitable state for injection while the mold provides the heat required for curing.

One of the major benefits of an optimized cold runner system is reduced material waste. Traditional runner systems may generate additional silicone waste that needs to be removed after molding. With a properly designed cold runner system, material can be delivered directly into the cavities with less unnecessary runner material.

This is particularly valuable for high-volume production. When thousands or millions of parts are produced, even a small reduction in material waste can have a meaningful impact on total production costs.

Cold runner technology can also contribute to improved automation. Because less runner material needs to be manually removed, production lines can be designed for more efficient automatic demolding and part handling.

However, cold runner design requires careful engineering. Factors such as material viscosity, gate position, runner dimensions, mold temperature, injection pressure, and curing conditions all need to be considered.

A poorly designed runner system can cause problems such as uneven filling, air entrapment, material imbalance, or inconsistent curing.

For this reason, the LSR machine, dosing system, mold, and material should be considered as one complete production system rather than as separate components.

As manufacturers continue to focus on cost reduction and sustainable production, optimized cold runner LSR molding technology will remain an important solution for improving material utilization and production efficiency.
